Changes Coming to SEC Staff
The SEC will appoint a new commissioner after Kara Stein left the agency earlier this month and Dan Kahl has been named Deputy Director of the OCIE.
Some staff reorganization is occurring at the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Commissioner Kara Stein left her post on Jan. 2 after serving past her term, as allowed by federal law. During her tenure, Stein pushed initiatives such as the consolidated audit trail and other initiatives designed to modernize the SEC. Prior to her post, Stein was Senior Policy Advisor for securities and banking matters for Jack Reed (D-Rhode Island), where she helped to draft and negotiate portions of the Dodd-Frank Act.
Stein’s departure leaves Commissioner Robert Jackson as the lone Democrat on the Commission. The White House has not announced her successor, though it was rumored in August to be vetting Allison H. Lee for the role. Lee previously worked for the SEC (including as a legal adviser to Commissioner Stein), and currently works as a Corporate Governance Consultant for Congress Park Consulting.
The SEC also announced that Daniel Kahl has been named Deputy Director of Office of Compliance Inspections and Examinations. Kahl has been serving as OCIE’s Chief Counsel since February 2016 and will continue to serve as Chief Counsel while also assuming this additional leadership role in OCIE.
