New Facility Signals Electrified Growth for Proterra
The electric-bus maker, and subject of MMG's Summer 2017 cover story, opened a new Los Angeles-area facility this week, continuing its accelerated growth.
Proterra opened a Los Angeles-area manufacturing facility this week, further evidence that the electric-bus maker—and subject of the most recent Middle Market Growth cover story—is moving full speed ahead.
Forbes reported that Proterra’s $20 million manufacturing facility will produce 400 buses per year and employ 100 workers. It will complement the company’s Silicon Valley manufacturing facility and its vehicle production facility in Greenville, South Carolina.
California Governor Jerry Brown attended Wednesday’s grand opening of the new facility in the City of Industry, a Los Angeles suburb.
“In order to achieve California’s climate goals, we need more electric cars, trucks and buses on the road. Manufacturing these electric buses in California creates good jobs and cleans up the air,” Brown said in Proterra’s press release announcing the facility.
The Los Angeles location is a strategic one for Proterra, enabling it to serve West Coast transit agencies. A recent successful ballot measure will bolster funding for transportation infrastructure initiatives in the region, creating new opportunities for clean energy.
MMG profiled Proterra in its Summer 2017 issue. Backed by private capital and a management team made up of Tesla alumni, the electric-bus maker is forging inroads in municipal transportation, a market dominated by diesel-powered vehicles.
